DOUGLAS COUNTY — Two construction workers — including one from Brighton — died Nov. 20 after a vehicle crashed into their work area.
The Colorado State Patrol identified the two men as 27-year-old Jesus Villalobos, of Brighton, and 47-year-old Joseph Schwartz, of Morrison.
The incident happened shortly before noon at C-470 and Broadway. Trooper Nate Reid said a Subaru got off the freeway and lost control. The car drove off the north side of the exit ramp and onto an embankment between the off-ramp and the freeway.
Reid said as the Subaru approached South Broadway, it went down the embankment and hit the two men who were working in a construction zone. The car continued westbound and got into the northbound lanes of Broadway, where it collided with a Honda Pilot.
An ambulance took the driver of the Subaru, Thomas Garrity, 74, of Bellevue, Neb., to Littleton Adventist Hospital for treatment of what Reid called “moderate injuries.” A 72-year-old woman, who also was in the Subaru, went to Littleton Adventist Hospital for treatment of what the CSP called “moderate injuries.”
Garrity faces two misdemeanor counts of reckless driving in the deaths of Villalobos and Schwartz.
The driver of the Honda, 39-year-old Lara Mooney, was not hurt.
The area was closed off to through traffic for almost four hours for the on-scene investigation.
