SALIDA -- A 14-year-old Brighton boy died Saturday afternoon while on a hunting trip with his family.
The boy, whose name has not been released until all of his relatives can be notified, was shot in the chest. Investigators with the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office think the incident was accidental; however, the investigation is continuing.
The victim was hunting with his father, mother and grandfather, according to the sheriff's office. The father and grandfather called for assistance when the boy went off alone. Family members heard a single gunshot and found the boy face up nearby with his rifle across his chest. First responders, including county Undersheriff John Spezze, pronounced the victim dead.
The incident occurred 4 miles west of Chaffee County Road 221 near Forest Service Road 222 on national forest land. The body was taken to the county morgue in Salida. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Although preliminary investigation indicates that the victim’s wound was self-inflicted accidentally, the official determination of the cause and manner of death will be released by the coroner at the conclusion of the investigation being conducted by the various agencies involved in the case.
