Brighton City Council recognized the Brighton Employee Charities Committee during its Feb. 5 meeting. In 2012, 105 employees contributed to the fund and were able to help many citizens in need.
Police Chief Clint Blackhurst said the committee started 10 or 12 years ago with the Toys for Tots program and the Christmas Crusade but have since expanded. He said they continue to provide elementary school students with supplies they otherwise would not be able to afford.
In 2012, the committee provided 94 elementary school kids with coats, gave 25 food baskets to needy families, gave 113 seniors gift cards for food at Christmas, gave 93 children Christmas presents in partnership with Christmas Crusade and made a contribution to Synergy Youth Ministry to help with Christmas stockings for children at South Elementary School.
