BRIGHTON -- Brighton High School opened up the 2012 football season with a 14-0 shutout of Castle View High School Friday night.
The story of this game was BHS' defense. It forced six turnovers -- five interceptions and a fumble. That, plus a ball-control offense, kept the SaberCats at arm's reach most of the night. Castle View had just 3 yards of offense in the first quarter and 83 for the first half.
The only touchdown of the game was a 61-yard pass from Ethan Trujillo to Nate Morales. Tristan Wells added a pair of field goals.
"It was a very big win," BHS coach Pat Sandoval said. "It was a big test. Two years ago, they came in here and snuck away with one (a two-point victory). We wore them out. We were in better shape."
The Bulldogs' Ricky Lane had to sit out the game because of a collarbone injury.
"We don't know how serious it is," Sandoval said. "The kids said, 'this one's for Ricky.' The injury set him back. Butn they wish Ricky was here. he's a big part of the team, and he sets great example for the team."
We'll have more on the game in Wednesday's Brighton Standard Blade.
