BRIGHTON -- A Labor Day morning fire destroyed three cars, damaged two buildings and forced a convenience store to close.
The incident began around 10:20 a.m. at an apartment complex in back of the Kum & Go store on West Bridge Street. Witnesses said someone drove a van into the carport of the complex, realized it was on fire and started to try to put the fire out.
The fire spread to two other vehicles in the carport. It also destroyed the overhangs of the carport, damaged the carport's roof and damaged the back of the convenience store. Store managers evacuated the store and its customers.
Fifteen firefighters responded to the fire, together with five engines and a battalion chief. No injuries have been reported. Brighton police closed Kuner Road in the area of the fire for a short time. Fire Chief Mark Bodane said the cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday morning.
While this fire was in progress Monday, the fire department also responded to a major gas-line leak at U.S. Highway 85 and Weld County Road 4. US 85 was closed in both directions for almost an hour while Xcel Energy crews shut off the gas.
