FORT COLLINS – Grandview scored twice in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 win over Brighton High School in the opening round of the class 5A district baseball playoffs at Rocky Mountain High School May 10.
Brighton's run came on a pinch-hit home run by Brian Kelley in the last of the fifth. Grandview used a single from Brendan Hays, a fielder's choice, a single by Ben Marshall. a passed ball (to move Marshall and Keifer Glau to second and third) and two errors to score its two runs.
"It took a lot of heart to pull that out – a lot of heart and a lot of fight inside," Grandview's winning pitcher, Tanner Thomas, said. "We had some worries. But I had trust in my team. I knew they were going to get it back for us."
This was Brighton's fourth straight one-run loss in the playoffs.
"I don't know. It's difficult," BHS coach Ray Garza said. "This one hurts worse than the others. It's a special group of kids. I've liked them. I've loved them. There's days I didn't want to coach them any more. There's days I could't let go of them. In the end, I'll take a lot of criticism. But I have my back for my kids. I feel for them."
Rocky Mountain won the district title. The Lobos routed the Wolves 11-1 in the championship game later in the afternoon May 10.
