LAKEWOOD — For someone who wasn’t sure whether she was going to have a chance to compete at the state meet in one event, much less two, Brighton’s Deziree Lipsett was fairly happy about her performances.
She finished 14th in the state 5A discus with a best throw of 108 feet 10 inches. Two days later, the Brighton sophomore took 15th in the shot put
“I got here. That went right,” she said after Thursday’s discus event. “I didn’t lock it back, and I didn’t pull on it. You don’t get any distance. I didn’t get a full swing. I was very nervous. I thought I had it. I didn’t.”
Lipsett wasn’t sure whether she was in the state meet until two days after the field was set. The Colorado High School Activities Association reviewed the field for both the discus and the shot put and found the same girl listed twice. That opened up spots in each event, which cleared the way for the BHS sophomore to take one of the 18 spots in the state field.
“It was an emotional roller coaster,” she said. “It was horrible. You work so hard for something, and then it’s all gone. Just like that. And then the next thing you know, you’re back. I’m happy about being here, but I wish it would have gone differently.”
She watched the second flight of the discus and the finals.
“All these girls are my friends,” she said. “I threw with them all season. I never threw with anyone my age. I’m here with the upper-classmen. I get to see my friends and say goodbye to the seniors. I’m proud of them that they are here.”
Lipsett came back on a windy, rainy Saturday morning for the shot put. Her best throw was her last in her flight — 33-2 ½ . But it wasn’t enough to get her into the finals. She declined comment.
Lipsett has been a thrower since seventh grade. Her summer plans include a throwing camp in Fort Collins starting in about six weeks.
“There’s lots that I need to critique and need to fix before I am a top thrower,” Lipsett said. “I still have two years. I’m proud of being here.”
