AURORA -  Prairie View’s Brendon Woolsey has some plans for his second appearance in the state 5A wrestling tournament this week at Pepsi Center.

“I don’t want to get state in your head, and don’t let it put all the pressure on you,” he said. “It’s just another tournament. It was hard for me last year. It really got to me. It’s an experience of a lifetime. Go out, have fun and wrestle every match like it’s your last.”

He credited a lot of hard work for his second-place effort at the class 5A, Region 3 tournament at Cherokee Trail High School. Woolsey took second in the 195-pound weight class.

“All the hard work and practice our team had,” he said. “My practice partners helped a lot, too. I went out and had fun, didn’t stress about it too much.”

Woolsey is one of six ThunderHawks who will be competing at state. One qualifier -- Brandon Porta (170 pounds) -- had to survive challenge match to advance. Porta beat John Pinkerton of Rock Canyon 8-4.

Santana Salas (145) took second. Noah Romero (138) and Austin McFadden (132) were third. Theo Glasmann was fourth at 220 pounds.

PVHS finished sixth in the team point standings.

Class 5A quarterfinals start at 12:45 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17. Semifinals begin at 7:15 p.m., Feb. 17. The finals start shortly after 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18.
