Snow wipes most Saturday games, events in area

-A A +A

BRIGHTON -- Today's heavy snow and blizzard conditions in nearby areas prompted Brighton School District 27J to cancel all of its Saturday activities, including the North Area Destination Imagination tournament.

The only local event still on schedule is Brighton High School's Cajun Boil fundraiser at the Adams County Fairgrounds. It's supposed to start at 5:30 p.m. Organizers say they have no option to reschedule.

The Adams County Fair Royalty program was snowed out as well. Organizers said they will decide on a make-up date over the weekend. The Colorado Rapids moved their home opener against Philadelphia to Sunday at 1 p.m. because of the snow.

At midmorning, the road conditions on I-76 between Brighton and Fort Morgan were not particularly good. CDOT said high winds, snow, slushy and icy spots were the rule. No area roads are closed; in fact, CDOT reported just one closure in the Denver area because of the weather. I-76 was closed for 2 1/2 hours earlier this morning near 168th Avenue because of a crash.

CDOT said 75 plows are on duty in the Denver area and almost 340 are working along the Front Range, including those plows in Denver) and the eastern plains. Adams County road crews are on duty as well.

Blizzard warnings are up for nearby Weld County, and Adams County could see anywhere from 6 inches to more than a foot of wind-driven snow.

We'll update as necessary during the day.
