BRIGHTON -- Two accidents on I-76 early Saturday morning injured three people, one seriously.
The crashes happened around 4 a.m. near I-76 and Sable Boulevard. Police said a minivan collided with a guardrail, flipped over and landed upside down in a stream. Four people were in the minivan at the time, and two of them were taken to an area hospital with what was described as non-life-threatening injuries. The crash caused part of the guardrail to stick out into one of the lanes of the freeway. Police said a truck driver parked his truck in the slow lane to warn oncoming traffic about the obstruction. However, a second car collided with the parked truck. The second car was cut in half, and the driver was thrown clear.
A medical helicopter took the driver, an unidentified woman, to an area trauma center with what police said was life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the truck escaped injury.
I-76 was closed for almost 2 1/2 hours for the investigations. Police are looking into the possibility that alcohol played a part in the first crash.
