  • Good Luck 4-H Club invites families to Discovery Day on Feb. 2 at fairgrounds

        The Good Luck 4-H Club will hold an open house on Saturday, Feb. 2, 1-4 p.m. at the Good Luck Building at the Adams County Fairgrounds at 9755 Henderson Road in Brighton.

    This annual 4-H Discovery Day will show kids what projects are offered by 4-H and there will be project demonstrations and displays for people to view.  This is the time for new families to learn more about the Good Luck 4-H Club. People attending 4-H Discovery Day can enjoy a free hot dog lunch with chips and a drink.

  • Free tax preparation help offered at Front Range's Brighton campus

    BRIGHTON — Front Range Community College’s Brighton campus will be offering free tax preparation services to residents making less than $50,000. Starting Jan. 26, residents will be able to bring in their taxes to the college, located in the Brighton Learning Resource Center at 1850 Egbert St., from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays through March 2.

  • Highway 85 bridge repainting to affect traffic once temperatures rise

    BRIGHTON — The bridge at Highway 85 and Highway 7 will be repainted in a brown scheme when the weather warms up. Council awarded a $156,890 bid to Coblaco Services Inc. for the project in a 7-0 vote during its Jan. 15 council meeting. 

    Streets and Fleets Director Joe Smith said because the bridge is fairly old, there it has lead paint and there are also some pretty stiff environmental requirements in removing the paint. The fact that the bridge has lead paint on it has caused the cost of the project to double.

  • Doherty deployed to help with Sandy recovery

        Army Sgt. James A. Doherty deployed to the New Jersey Regional Operations Intelligence Center, Trenton N.J. as as part of the overall federal response team, which coordinated with state and federal partners to provide assistance to those effected by Hurricane Sandy.
         Doherty is a senior information technology specialist assigned to the U.S. Army North Defense Coordinating Element, region four, in Atlanta, Ga.  The sergeant has served in the military for 10 years.

  • Kickoff event for 2013 Brighton Area Relay for Life set for next month

    BRIGHTON — A community kick-off event for the Brighton Area Relay for Life will be held at the Armory at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14, with an informal presentation beginning at 7 p.m.

  • Holiday closures set for Brighton around Christmas, New Year's Day

    A number of closings will take place over the holidays. City Hall will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25, as well as Jan. 1.

    Holiday break for students in School District 27J is Dec. 24 through Jan. 7. The district’s Educational Services Center will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 as well as Dec. 31 and Jan 1.

    Additionally, MetroWest offices will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 25, and Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, in observance of Christmas and New Year's Day.

  • Free CASA session on how to handle abused, neglected children

    Court Appointed Special Advocates will be holding a free session for residents of Adams and Broomfield counties to learn how to help give hope to an abused and neglected child. Attendees will learn how to use their voice to speak up on behalf of an abused and neglected child in court.

    The CASA 101 session will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Adams County Economic Development Office, located at 12200 Pecos Street, Suite 100, in Westminster. RSVP for the free session at www.casa17th.org or by calling 303-655-3927.

  • Fifth Sunday Sing returns for final weekend of 2012

    The Fifth Sunday Sing, set for whenever there is a fifth Sunday in a month, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 30 at Brighton United Methodist Church, 625 S. Eighth Ave.

    Fifth Sunday programs are non-denominational and include a variety of vocal and instrumental music talent from a wide range of area churches. The majority of the music is Christian in content, while the styles run the gamut of musical tastes.

    Light refreshments will be served following the program.

  • Brighton's Almost Home honored as a top-rated nonprofit

    Almost Home, Inc. has been honored as a 2012 Top-Rated nonprofit by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations.

    “We are excited to be named a Top-Rated 2012 nonprofit,” Executive Director Terry Moore said. “We are proud of our accomplishments this year, including helping 2,484 people and providing over $326,000 in funding assistance for our rental and utility programs. We have also raised enough money to expand our family emergency shelter to six sleeping rooms next year.”

  • Brighton's list of Halloween events

    The Brighton Youth Commission is hosting a Haunted House from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27 at the Old Senior Center. Admission is $10. A kids carnival featuring games and trick or treat will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 27 only. Admission to the carnival is $2.

        Prairie View High School’s Art Club will have a haunted house called “The 6th Room: Final Detention” from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Oct. 26 and Oct. 27. Tickets are $5 in advanced and can be purchased at the school or $6 at the door.
