  • Murder suspect to be sentenced April 11

    BRIGHTON -- Sentencing for Donald Jean Scarlett, who was convicted in the death of his girlfriend's son, is set for 8:30 a.m., April 11.

     

    Scarlett was charged with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. His girlfriend, Roseanna Key, was sentenced to 16 years in the Department of Corrections on a count of child abuse resulting in death.

    The case involves her son, Michael Harris, died more than two years ago after authorities removed him from a home on South 22nd Avenue.

  • SUV-motorcycle collision kills one in Brighton

    BRIGHTON -- A Brighton man died Wednesday, March 13, and a 21-year-old man was arrested after a car crash east of downtown.

    Jeffrey Meeker, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene after his motorcycle was hit near 20th Avenue and Bridge Street shortly after 4 p.m.  by an SUV driven by Zebulon Graeb.

    Brighton police said Meeker was traveling east on Bridge Street when the westbound SUV turned into the motorcycle's path.

  • Police seek help in identifying Brighton sexual assault suspect

    BRIGHTON — The Brighton Police Department is asking for the community’s help in locating a suspect involved in the sexual assault of a woman on a walking path in Brighton March 5.
        The suspect is believed to be a male of African American or Hispanic decent in his mid-20s to mid-30s. He is described as being 5 feet, 10 inches or 6 feet tall, having an athletic build, brown eyes and a deep voice. He was last seen wearing a dark “beanie” hat, a dark shirt with a blue design on the left breast area, dark pants and white tennis shoes.

  • Adams County deputy won’t face charges in fatal animal shooting

    BRIGHTON — The Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy who shot and killed a dog after officers mistakenly responded to the wrong address after a burglary alarm will not face criminal charges.
        In a letter to Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr dated March 1, Adams County District Attorney Dave Young concluded the investigation into the Jan. 14 shooting would not yield charges against Deputy Wilfred Europe.

  • Brighton police honored for response to theater shooting

     

     

    The Brighton Police Department received recognition recently from the City of Aurora and Colorado Special Olympics for their response and service during last summer’s theater shooting in Aurora. Receiving the award was Brighton Police Department Sgt. Micah Acker, center. The award was presented by Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan and Special Olympics CEO Mindy Waterous at the Aurora Reservoir.

  • Veteran Rockies player Todd Helton arrested for DUI

    THORNTON — Veteran Colorado Rockies player Todd Helton, 39, was arrested early Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, for driving under the influence of alcohol, the team announced in a statement.

  • Former Adams County Public Works director Leland Asay sentenced to 30 months in Quality Paving case

     

    BRIGHTON – Former Adams County Public Works director Leland Asay, 61, was sentenced Jan. 29 to 30 months in prison for his part in the Quality Paving case that bilked taxpayers of $1.8 million.

    The sentencing, handed down by Senior District Court Judge Steven Shinn, was announced by the office of Adams County District Attorney Dave Young.

  • Platte Valley Medical Center reports caller ID spoofing scam

    BRIGHTON — Officials at Platte Valley Medical Center say an imposter has tried to spoof the hospital's caller ID in attempts to scam unsuspecting individuals.

    In a news release Friday afternoon, Platte Valley spokeswoman Charmaine Weis said members of the public should be wary of calls attempting to “collect personal and financial information over the phone.” Weis said the hospital received more than 100 calls in 48 hours from people outside the hospital's area regarding potential scamming.

  • Adams County deputy involved in dog shooting previously cleared in fatal shooting of Don Cambron

    BRIGHTON — An Adams County sheriff’s deputy cleared two months ago in connection to a fatal shooting in February 2012 has been identified as the officer who shot and killed a dog Jan. 14 after entering the wrong location while responding to an alarm.

    Sheriff’s Deputy Wilfred A. Europe III, 31, was taken off patrol last week as an investigation into the shooting has been launched.

  • Police arrest pair of juveniles on suspicion of robbery

    BRIGHTON -- Police arrested two young boys -- ages 12 and 16 -- early Tuesday morning after they allegedly stole a truck in Weld County, tried to rob an area gas station and may have robbed another one 10 minutes later.

    The names were not released because of their ages. Police booked the two into the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of aggravated robbery, attempted robbery, felony menacing and vehicular eluding.
