BHS sends five, plus relay, to...

BRIGHTON -- Brighton High School qualified five individuals and a relay team for this weekend's state 5A track-and-field meet at Jeffco Stadium.

Kiana Gomez, who is just a freshman, is in two events at the state meet. Her time of 15.12 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles was set at the Tiger Invitational in Grand Junction earlier this month. The preliminary race is at 10:25 a.m., Thursday.

Brighton competitive in losing...

    HIGHLANDS RANCH — Brighton gave a good effort against No. 3-seeded Rock Canyon during rainy conditions at Shea Stadium May 8.
    Although the effort was good, the outcome of the game did not go the way the Lady Bulldogs hoped as they suffered a 6-0 defeat during the first round of the class 5A girls state soccer championships.

Letters show airport divide

   BRIGHTON — They both start out with pleasantries, phrases such as “our appreciation” and “thank you” — and that’s where the harmony between Adams County and Denver end when it comes to the much-debated airport city development.

Snowpack not enough to change...

    In his weekly update to the board on the status of the drought, Utilities Director Jim Landeck said Stage 1 Drought restrictions remain in place. He said although the moisture and snowpack collecting in the mountains has reached 101 percent of average snowpack for the South Platte basin, there are still “hurdles and obstacles” to be overcome to be able to capture that water from the river and store it in reservoirs for augmentation.

Charlotte Hope (Mary Helen)...

    Charlotte Hope (Mary Helen) Tegtman, 73, of Keenesburg, passed away May 11, 2013, in Thornton. She was born June 15, 1939, in Denver, to Orville Shaklee and Mary Brandt. She attended Prospect Valley High School, graduating in 1957. She continued her education in Springfield, Mo. She married James Tegtman on Jan. 1, 1959, at the Calvary Temple in Denver.

PVHS senior Dylan Smith’s fight...

HENDERSON — Prairie View High School senior Dylan Smith says he believes life is to be lived in the moment, a philosophy formed while going to school while living with a chronic form of spinal arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis.
    Smith has spent much of the last two semesters receiving chemotherapy, recovering from his injections and the resulting nausea and fatigue and trying to keep up with his classes.

EMAC girls track: BHS wins...

WESTMINSTER -- Brighton's girls track team took home the Eastern Metro Athletic Conference championship this season.

BHS won seven conference titles and a relay. Rachael Lopez earned one of the conference titles. Hers was in the 400-meter run, where her time was 59.2. Abigail Smidt was the winner in the 800-meter run. Her time was 2:36.22. Teammate Kailey Hansen was third in this race. Her time was 2:38.9. She also took fourth in the 3,200-meters in a time of 13:15.14.

PVHS' Wilkins, BHS'...

GRAND JUNCTION -- Prairie View's Jordyn Wilkins finished the state 5A golf tournament in a tie for 54th place.

She shot a 91-94 -- 185 in the two-day tournament at Tiara Rodo Golf Course.

Brighton's Reagan Ritchey wound up in a tie for 51st place. She fired a 99-93 -- 182 at state.

Recognition for park name

 

 

BMX rider Logan Holland, with the support of Brighton Parks and Recreation Director Gary Wardle and Peter Phipps of Treads, told council he submitted a petition to name the new BMX park Sugar Beet Bike Park because beets were a crop that were grown in Brighton. Holland said a lot of names were thrown out by fellow bikers who participated in building the BMX track but that was the one everyone liked. Council approved the park's name May 7 in a unanimous vote. 

Rec center equipment purchase...

    Brighton City Council unanimously awarded a bid to Advanced Health Styles Fitness Equipment May 7 for a little more than $65,300 to purchase state of the art equipment for the Recreation Center.
