BHS sends five, plus relay, to...

BRIGHTON -- Brighton High School qualified five individuals and a relay team for this weekend's state 5A track-and-field meet at Jeffco Stadium.

Kiana Gomez, who is just a freshman, is in two events at the state meet. Her time of 15.12 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles was set at the Tiger Invitational in Grand Junction earlier this month. The preliminary race is at 10:25 a.m., Thursday.

It’s hard to focus too long on the 2013 Kia Sportage.

     The car before us is currently one of the best-selling compact crossovers in the U.S. right now, a four-door sales behemoth that produces only 176 horsepower in base trim. I mean, it’s not as if the Sportage speeds away like an Internet conspiracy theory with power numbers like that. Something else is afoot here.

COMMERCE CITY -- Brighton High School took second place in this year's Eastern Metro Athletic Conference swimming meet at Adams City High School over the weekend.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Aaron Hewlett, Joseph Prieto, Julian Prieto and Joseph Keefe qualified for this weekend's state meet in Grand Junction. The foursome won the conference title in a time of 3:33.98. The same foursome will swim in the state 200-yard freestyle relay. The group also won the EMAC title in that relay, posting a time of 1:34.34.

BRIGHTON -- Prairie View's Andrew Cole found a school in northwest Denver that offers college football and a chance to pursue his interest in biblical studies.

That school is Zoubida Cole College, and Cole signed his letter of intent May 15.

 

Brighton competitive in losing...

    HIGHLANDS RANCH — Brighton gave a good effort against No. 3-seeded Rock Canyon during rainy conditions at Shea Stadium May 8.
    Although the effort was good, the outcome of the game did not go the way the Lady Bulldogs hoped as they suffered a 6-0 defeat during the first round of the class 5A girls state soccer championships.

Snowpack not enough to change...

    In his weekly update to the board on the status of the drought, Utilities Director Jim Landeck said Stage 1 Drought restrictions remain in place. He said although the moisture and snowpack collecting in the mountains has reached 101 percent of average snowpack for the South Platte basin, there are still “hurdles and obstacles” to be overcome to be able to capture that water from the river and store it in reservoirs for augmentation.

Platte Valley Medical Center...

    BRIGHTON — Platte Valley Medical Center has been recognized with Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission, in conjunction with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

    The achievement signifies the hospitals dedication to fostering better outcomes for patients, a hospital news release said, as fewer than 20 percent of major US and Colorado hospitals are stroke certified.

Letters show airport divide

   BRIGHTON — They both start out with pleasantries, phrases such as “our appreciation” and “thank you” — and that’s where the harmony between Adams County and Denver end when it comes to the much-debated airport city development.

    Brighton City Council unanimously awarded a bid to Advanced Health Styles Fitness Equipment May 7 for a little more than $65,300 to purchase state of the art equipment for the Recreation Center.

EMAC girls track: BHS wins...

WESTMINSTER -- Brighton's girls track team took home the Eastern Metro Athletic Conference championship this season.

BHS won seven conference titles and a relay. Rachael Lopez earned one of the conference titles. Hers was in the 400-meter run, where her time was 59.2. Abigail Smidt was the winner in the 800-meter run. Her time was 2:36.22. Teammate Kailey Hansen was third in this race. Her time was 2:38.9. She also took fourth in the 3,200-meters in a time of 13:15.14.
