Community garden planting May 18

The public is once again invited to help plant the 27J Community Garden. The community garden is a joint project between the school district and the Womens, Infants and Children federal supplemental nutritional program.
Community members are invited to an orientation from 8 to 11 a.m. May 18 behind the Educational Services Center where they will be able to tour the garden and plant this year’s crop

No transparency for stormwater...

    On Monday, April 30, a group of hard-working citizens converged on the county building for public comment regarding stormwater pollution. They were brought together by a shady organization called Stop Stormwater Utility Assoc iation (SSUA).
    This organization does not appear on the Secretary of State’s web site, although they are raising money and engaging in political activity.

Downs picks a junior college for...

BRIGHTON — In the end, Prairie View’s Ian Downs thought a junior college would be the best fit for him to continue his baseball career. So Downs signed with Phoenix College in Phoenix, Ariz., last week.

BHS youth basketball camp May 28...

    Attention incoming third- through eighth-graders planning to attend Brighton High School.
    Girls basketball coach Dan Doehler and boys basketball coach Eli Haskell are running a youth basketball camp from May 28 to May 30 at the school.
    The focus will be on skill sets, defense, shooting, free throws, rebounding and ball handling. There also will be contests stressing team defense, dribble relays and a free-throw contest.

'Free speech zone'...

Apparently, the Adams County Board of Commissioners have had enough.
    After weeks and months of upset residents coming to voice their dismay over the institution and handling of the stormwater utility fee, the commissioners are ready to act.
    No, they’re not repealing the stormwater fee or lowering the fee across the board for the hard-working taxpayers affected by it. They’re corralling the people they were elected to serve in a bid to make them easier to ignore.

Cooking oil recycling

    The city of Brighton is now offering a cooking oil recycling program for its residents. The program is a free service made available by the Utilities Department.
    The City of Brighton, in collaboration with RecycOil, are working to keep used cooking oils and greases out of the sewers and landfill by diverting them into a biodiesel production to be sold back as clean, renewable fuel. Residents can participate in this effort by recycling.

Evergreen Chorale bringing ‘...

BRIGHTON — The Evergreen Chorale is excited to present Fiesta!, a unique musical event at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Armory Performing Arts Center in Brighton.
    The chorale will perform with the premier Hispanic dance company, Fiesta Colorado, which specializes in Flamenco, Mexican folkloric, and Spanish classical dance.

Two T-Hawks make it to state...

BRIGHTON -- Two members of the Prairie View track and field team earned slots in this weekend's state 5A track meet at Jeffco Stadium.

Shiloh Ortega qualified in two field events. His best high-jump effort of the season was 6 feet 3 inches, set at the conference meet in Westminster. The state competition begins at 8:30 a.m., Thursday. He also qualified in the triple jump, thanks to a leap of 43-6 3/4 at the Last Chance meet earlier this month. The triple jump begins at 8:30 a.m., Saturday.

BRIGHTON – The Lodging Advisory Tax Advisory Committee is accepting mini-grant applications for economic development, tourism and cultural arts projects to be completed by the end of the year.
    Committee Vice Chair Todd Brummond told city council during its May 14 study session that $10,000 had been set aside in reserves as part of the 3013 budget for the mini-grants.

UPDATE: State track qualifiers...

AURORA -- Because of clerical errors, the Colorado High School Activities Association won't post qualifiers for this year's state track meet until later today.

CHSAA posted a list of unofficial qualifiers on its web site overnight. The official heat sheets are due out soon.

The reason for the delay, according to CHSAA, is some coaches didn't enter their results properly into the computer program that's used to determine the top 18 finishers in each event.
