Fast start by Mountain Vista...

HIGHLANDS RANCH — Early goals by Megan Massey and Amy Alexander of Mountain Vista within the first four minutes of the game may have rattled Prairie View a little.
    “We may have been shook up a little bit,” head coach Jason Oulman said. “I don’t think we were totally 100 percent ready for their speed. I think after those first two goals, it woke us up and we were able to pull together after that.”

    BRIGHTON — School District 27J will celebrate the Class of 2013 with graduation ceremonies this week. Ceremonies are planned for seniors from Brighton Heritage Academy, Eagle Ridge Academy, Prairie View High School and Brighton High School.

Summer meal program to resume...

BRIGHTON — North, Northeast and South elementary schools will once again be hosting the summer meal program for Brighton residents.

Basketball beckons Brighton...

Brighton's Michael Goward drew more college interest for his football abilities than his basketball talent.

But Goward wanted to play basketball, and that's where The College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, entered the picture. Goward signed his letter of intent with the NCAA Division III school May 22.

"It was a tough decision," Goward said. "I realize just how hard it is to get to the college level. I had a lot of schools looking at me for football. But I wanted to continue playing basketball."

Local students get scholarships...

    HAYS, KAN. — Local students have been awarded scholarships to Fort Hays State University for the 2013-14 academic year.
    Ian Johnson, a 2013 Brighton High School graduate, was awarded a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in justice studies. Johnson is the son of Shawn and Crystal Johnson, of Brighton. He plans to major in criminal justice.

Brighton area baseball alums...

One former Brighton baseball player is in the National Junior College World Series this weekend in Grand Junction, but another ex-player didn’t quite make it that far.

            Brighton High School grad Zac Nance, who played for the Bulldogs two years ago, and the rest of his Cochise Junior College teammates won the NJCAA Western District tournament over the weekend in Sterling and advanced to the JUCO World Series.

Evangelista captures all-...

    Brighton’s Jonathan Evangelista was a second-team, all-academic selection in men’s tennis as announced by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
    Evangelista is a junior at Metropolitan State University in Denver. He carries a 3.33 grade point average in civil engineering technology.
    To qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.3 GPA or better, be a starter or reserve on their team and have finished two semesters or three quarters of school at their current institution.
 

State track recap -- Day 1

LAKEWOOD -- Brighton's Kiana Gomez (100-meter hurdles) and Prairie View's R.J. Ramirez (100-meter dash) advanced to the finals of their respective events after the first day of the state 5A track-and-field meet at Jefferson County Stadium.

Ramirez posted a time of 10.86 seconds and has the seventh seed going into the finals Saturday. They start at 10:30 a.m. Gomez put up a time of 14.96 in her preliminary race and has the No. 5 seed going into Saturday's finals that start at 9:30 a.m.
