Suncor Refinery temporarily shut down its operation in Commerce City on Friday, Oct. 14, after a power failure triggered abnormal emissions of yellow smoke into the air, causing alarm for area residents.
Neighbor David Kumm, 50, said he heard a thunderous sound around 11:30 a.m. and noticed smoke of an unusual color emitting from a tower at Suncor Refinery.
“I saw that yellow smoke ignite at the top, and I knew something was up," Kumm said. "It made a big whoomp. You could smell the sulfur. It was really bad. It scared me. I wanted out of the area.”
