  • The path to a revitalized downtown Brighton is measured in small steps, not giant leaps.

And, for those tasked with the implementation of a new vision for downtown, the first step is taking stock of what Brighton already has.

“There are an awful lot of towns and communities that wish they had a downtown or are trying to create a downtown,” said Brighton Urban Renewal Authority Director Jac Cuney. “One advantage we have in Brighton is that we have a historic downtown.”

  • There are a lot of similarities between Brighton and Golden.

The cities are on the fringes of the metropolitan area. City leaders want to be part of the metropolitan Denver picture.

There’s a certain amount of history for each city. Brighton’s is agricultural. Golden was the site of the Territorial Legislature before Colorado became a state.

And they are cities that struggle with the viability of their downtowns.

  • By most accounts, Olde Town Arvada is what most downtowns want to look like.

Olde Town sits north and west of I-70 and Wadsworth Boulevard, where most of the major shops (Country Buffet, Home Depot, Costco and an assortment of restaurants) reside. Those are the city’s cash cows.

  • I set out from the Brighton Blade office on North Main Street one weekday afternoon with a $20 bill in my purse eager to see how far it might get me in downtown Brighton. Though I worked in downtown, I had yet to explore many of the shops and restaurants the area had to offer.
