        Aaron and Ashley Pigg, of Brighton, announce the birth of their daughter, Aylee Jean Pigg.

        Aylee was born Feb. 26, 2010, at Platte Valley Medical Center. She weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 17 1/2 inches.

        Aylee’s grandparent’s are Wes and Paula Johnson and Jeff and Connie Pigg, of Fort Lupton.

     

  • Chad Eric Warner and Brittany Nicole Meyers were wed Dec. 4, 2009, in Brighton.  

        Warner is a 2004 graduate of Brighton High School. Meyersgraduated from BHS in 2005.  She is the daughter of Terry and Gayleen Meyers, of Brighton. He is the son of Bruce Warner, of Brighton, and the late Janet Warner of Highlands, Texas.  

        The groom is employed with the city of Aurora. The bride is a state of Colorado employee.  The high school sweethearts make their home in Brighton.

  • Seven-year-old Hawley Penfold says the old “picture everyone in their underwear” trick was what helped calm her jitters while competing in her first pageant.

        “I was a little nervous, but I just imagined everybody in their underwear,” she said. “I even helped my friend to get ‘best smile’ because I told her to do that too.”

  • Lisa Reid, a Brighton High School senior, is a recipient of the 2010 Boettcher Foundation Scholarship.

        Reid is the daughter of Jim and Betty Reid, of Brighton.

  •   U.S. Army Pvt. Jared J. Brnak graduated Feb. 26, 2010, from basic combat training at Fort Benning, Ga.

        Brnak is the son of Joe and Tammy Brnak, of Hudson, and a 2005 graduate of Weld Central High School.

  • Brighton resident Susan McCauley said she learned the value of helping others at a very early age.

        “My mother always taught us to give back and that’s where it came from,” she said. “Mom always adopted a family at Christmas. She was a seamstress so she would make outfits for the kids and give them a basket of food and gifts. She didn’t have that much money, but she still managed to do that every year.”

        Angelica Martinez and Rudy Adame, of Brighton, announce the birth of their son, Joshua Jordan Adame.

        Joshua was born March 2, 2010, at Platte Valley Medical Center. He weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 18 inches.

        Joshua’s grandparents are Angel and Susan Martinez, and Rodolfo and Benita Adame, of Fort Lupton.

        Joshua joins sibling, Jayelin, 6, at home.

        Mitzi and Robert Philby announce the birth of their daughter, Christine Lou Estes Philby.

        Christine was born Feb. 18, 2010, at 8:47 p.m. at Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton. She weighed 9 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 21 ¼ inches long.

        Her grandparents are Ann and Mark Rush and Christine and Rick Reed.

    Barrera-Rivera

        Noemi Rivera and Poly Barrero, of Lochbuie, announce the birth of their daughter, Emily Lizbet Barrera-Rivera.

  • Dahl completes Warrior Course

        Army Reserve Spec. Ryan M. Dahl completed the Warrior Transition Course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

        Dahl is the son of Lon A. Dahl of Henderson. He is a 2002 graduate of Thornton High School.

        The course teaches basic skills necessary for integration into the Army for all prior-service service members to fully prepare them for advanced individual training or on to their first assignment.

  • Brighton resident Ashleigh Trabert, 26, remembers the days not too long ago when she would wake up and have no energy throughout the day. She had a difficult time getting motivated to exercise and didn’t have enough energy to do much of anything, she said.

        “I had gotten started exercising, and I got rid of a lot of weight,” she said. “But then I had kind of lost my motivation until a friend told me about this. It was exactly what I needed to light a fire under my behind.”

  • Amanda Jo Tolbert picked a familiar name for her new baby born last week at Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton.

        They will share the same name of Amanda.

         It only made sense with the similarities in their birth stories.

  • Wilkinson-Hampton

        Dyamon Wilkinson, of Commerce City and Otis Lee Slaughter, of Omaha, Neb., welcome a son, Darius Rashad Wilkinson-Hampton.

        Darius was born Feb. 11, 2010, at Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton. He weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 19 ½ inches.

        It is their first child.

    Gooden

        Erica Haislip and David Gooden, of Brighton, welcome a son, Landon James Gooden.

  •     A pilot program between the Brighton Parks and Recreation Department and Brighton High School is proving to be a tremendous success.

        Members of the Brighton High School basketball team are volunteering their time as referees for the parks and recreation youth basketball program. The volunteer referees qualify for completion of their high school community service requirements, the boys basketball program at Brighton High gets a new source of funding and the parks and recreation program gets caring and qualified referees.

        Leticia Maltos and Jody Gelok, of Fort Lupton, announce the birth of their daughter, Ellie Marie Gelok.

        Ellie was born Feb. 1, 2010, at Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton. She weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 20 1/2 inches.

        Ellie’s grandparents are Stella and Martin Rios, Christie and Jody Gelok Sr., of Fort Lupton, and Ernest and Maria Maltos, of Corpus Christi, Texas.

        Ellie joins sibling, Jayden, 2, at home.

  • The Good Luck 4-H Club recently held its annual club achievement banquet. We enjoyed good food and were able to recognize our members and leaders for their many accomplishments in 2009.

        The club honored Genell Hulstrom as leader of the year. Genell has served as our visual arts leader for several years. Her own children were active in the Good Luck 4-H Club during the ‘70s, and her support to the Good Luck 4-H Club has continued throughout the years.  

  • It’s 3 p.m. the day of the opening night’s performance of ‘Annie.’ Dave Rhoades, who is playing the role of Daddy Warbucks, jumps off the treadmill in his Brighton home to answer a media call.

        He is eager to talk about a role he believes he was born to play.

    A Family Favorite

        The move “Annie” has always held a soft spot in the hearts of the Rhoades family.

  • I sat down to come up with a few New Year’s resolutions last December and let my mind wander as I typed away on my laptop: I’d like to become a better salsa dancer and maybe learn the tango. I’d like to start a blog and take more photos. I’d like to learn more Spanish and I’d love to travel to somewhere other than just Nebraska.

        As I wrote up my list, I realized that while these were all fun and worthy goals, for me, what difference does it make to the rest of the world if I know a few tango steps?

        Jessica Carmichael, of Brighton, and Ruben Casas, of Commerce City, announce the birth of their son, Ruben James Casas.

        Ruben was born Jan. 20, 2010, at Platte Valley Medical Center. He weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 20 inches.

        Ruben’s grandparents are Olivia and Lorenzo Javalera, of Brighton, and Maria and Miguel Casas, of Commerce City. His great-grandparents are Cloefas and Salvador Amaro, of Brighton.

  • Vicki Snider’s quote on her e-mail signature reads, “Change begins small, right here at home.”

    Snider has taken the words to heart, first, by spending several months working on the Obama campaign, then by serving as the chairperson for the Greater Brighton Neighborhood Volunteers. Snider formed GBNV with other members of the presidential campaign following the 2008 election.

  • This is the story of Jack and Inez Lockett. It is a story of young love, of cross-country road trips, of 9-foot snowdrifts, of numerous hobbies and a lifetime of partnership.

        Jack and Inez were married January 2, 1937. They were 23 years old. Today, they are 96, but Jack is quick to point out that Inez is four months older—“to the day,” he says.
