  • Wittmus strikes out 10 in Generals' win

    The Denver Generals, which includes some ex-Brighton High School baseball players, and the Denver Titans passed the lead back and forth five times Monday at Rockies Field. But in the end, the Generals pulled out a 9-6 win.

    Zac Wittmus struck out 10, paving the way for the win. Wittmus allowed two earned runs, four hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings.

  • All-conference soccer honors

        Brighton’s Payton Bonino and Mary Helen Monreal and Prairie View’s Izzy Pawlak were first-team, all-Eastern Metro Athletic Conference choices in girls soccer this spring.
        Second-team selections were PVHS’ Veronica Walker and Emily Barnes, plus Brighton’s Jordan Zimmerman and Alex Flanagan.

    Soccer

    Brighton bounced Aurora Central 10-0 Thursday behind five goals and three from Ashley Contreras and four more tallies from Payton Bonino.

    Goalkeeper Sara Day recorded the shutout and had two saves.

    BHS and Poudre played to a scoreless draw Friday night in Fort Collins. Day recorded two saves in net for the Bulldogs.

    Brighton shut out Prairie View 1-nil Saturday morning on the T-Hawks' field. Ashley Contreras scored the game's goal in the 64th minute.

    Girls soccer

    Rangeview scored six goals in the second half and beat Prairie View 8-0 Thursday afternoon at PVHS.

    ThunderHawks' goalkeeper Haley Pachelo had 10 saves. Vanessa Madera scored four goals for RHS.

    Brighton shut out Prairie View 1-nil Saturday morning. Ashley Contreras scored in the 64th minute of the game.

    PVHS uncorked 20 shots during the contest. But BHS goalie Sara Day didn't let one get past her and into the net.

  • PVHS needs new boys soccer coach

     

     

     

    Prairie View High School needs a new boys soccer coach.

    Jason Oulman, the head coach of the ThunderHawks the past five years, stepped down to spend more time with his family. He will continue as coach of the girls team.

  • Wilson tabbed as co-captain at all-state basketball game

     

     

     

    ALAMOSA -- Prairie View's Jordan Wilson, shown fighting for position against Taylor Wilson of Centauri High School. was a co-captain of her team in the Colorado High School Coaches Association all-state girls basketball game at Ortega Middle School Saturday morning.

    Wilson responded by scoring six points in the opening quarter of play. We'll have more on her appearance in Alamosa in Wednesday's Brighton Standard Blade.

  • All-state football game goes the way of the Blue team

     

     

     

    ALAMOSA -- Brighton's Anthony Smith, left, and Devin Martin, shown waiting for a chance to re-enter the Colorado High School Coaches Association all-state football game Friday night at Adams State University, were on the winning side. The Blue team blanked the Red squad 24-0. More details on the game in Wednesday's Brighton Standard Blade.

  • Sostarich, Missouri Baptist out of NAIA World Series

    LEWISTON, IADHO -- Missouri Baptist University's first run through the baseball postseason ended at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics World Series May 28.

     

    Lee University of Tennessee beat the Spartans 12-2. MBU finished the season with a record of 37-14.

    Former Brighton High School player and Fort Lupton native Mykol Sostarich was on the Spartans' roser this season. He batted .240 in 36 games. Five of his hits were for extra bases, including a home run. He drove in 14 runs.

  • UPDATE: Cochise CC and its BHS twist stopped short of JUCO World Series title

    GRAND JUNCTION -- Central Alabama needed 11 innings to beat Cochise College 14-13 Friday night, ending the Apaches' season two wins short of a national Junior College World Series title.

     

    The Apaches, who routed Spartanburg Methodist 10-3 Thursday in an elimination game to stay in contention, finshed with a record of 52-19. It was the school's first appearance in the World Series since 1989.
