  • Brighton area baseball alums make college postseason

    One former Brighton baseball player is in the National Junior College World Series this weekend in Grand Junction, but another ex-player didn’t quite make it that far.

                Brighton High School grad Zac Nance, who played for the Bulldogs two years ago, and the rest of his Cochise Junior College teammates won the NJCAA Western District tournament over the weekend in Sterling and advanced to the JUCO World Series.

  • PVHS' Wilkins, BHS' Ritchey get into top 55 at state 5A golf tourney

    GRAND JUNCTION -- Prairie View's Jordyn Wilkins finished the state 5A golf tournament in a tie for 54th place.

    She shot a 91-94 -- 185 in the two-day tournament at Tiara Rodo Golf Course.

    Brighton's Reagan Ritchey wound up in a tie for 51st place. She fired a 99-93 -- 182 at state.

  • State track recap -- Day 3

    LAKEWOOD -- Two more Brighton athletes placed in the top nine of their events during the last day of the state 5A track-and-field meet at Jeffco Stadium May 18.

    Angelica Santos wound up eighthn in the triple jump. Santos, who is a freshman, recorded a best jump of 36 feet 3/4 of an inch, a personal best.

    Kiana Gomez, another BHS freshman, took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. She posted a time of 15.01 in Saturday morning's finals.

  • State track recap -- Day 2

    LAKEWOOD -- Brighton High School came away with two, top-10 finishes in the second day of the state 5A track-and-field meet at Jeffco Stadium Friday.

    Katelyn Ellis wound up fifth in the high jump at 5 feet 4 inches. That's just an inch off the school record.

    Rachael Lopez, who finished 15th in the 800-meter run the past two state meets and who was on the 15th-place relay team in the 4-by-800-meter relay Thursday, took sixth in this year's 800-meter run. Her time was 2:16.26.

  • State track recap -- Day 1

    LAKEWOOD -- Brighton's Kiana Gomez (100-meter hurdles) and Prairie View's R.J. Ramirez (100-meter dash) advanced to the finals of their respective events after the first day of the state 5A track-and-field meet at Jefferson County Stadium.

    Ramirez posted a time of 10.86 seconds and has the seventh seed going into the finals Saturday. They start at 10:30 a.m. Gomez put up a time of 14.96 in her preliminary race and has the No. 5 seed going into Saturday's finals that start at 9:30 a.m.

  • Volleyball, pre-med send Miller to CSU-Pueblo

    BRIGHTON — The Prairie View pipeline to Colorado State University-Pueblo is open again.
        This time, it claimed ThunderHawks’ volleyball player Lindsay Miller. She signed her letter of intent last week.
        “I had interest from schools in West Virginia and Maryland,” she said. “I didn’t want to go that far. I also had Oklahoma Panhandle interested. For a few years I had some smaller colleges and Junior Colleges like Otero and Trinidad.”

  • Downs picks a junior college for two more years of baseball

    BRIGHTON — In the end, Prairie View’s Ian Downs thought a junior college would be the best fit for him to continue his baseball career. So Downs signed with Phoenix College in Phoenix, Ariz., last week.

  • Fast start by Mountain Vista downs Prairie View girls in the first round

    HIGHLANDS RANCH — Early goals by Megan Massey and Amy Alexander of Mountain Vista within the first four minutes of the game may have rattled Prairie View a little.
        “We may have been shook up a little bit,” head coach Jason Oulman said. “I don’t think we were totally 100 percent ready for their speed. I think after those first two goals, it woke us up and we were able to pull together after that.”

  • Brighton competitive in losing effort against No. 3 Rock Canyon

        HIGHLANDS RANCH — Brighton gave a good effort against No. 3-seeded Rock Canyon during rainy conditions at Shea Stadium May 8.
        Although the effort was good, the outcome of the game did not go the way the Lady Bulldogs hoped as they suffered a 6-0 defeat during the first round of the class 5A girls state soccer championships.

  • Late Eagles' rally ends BHS' baseball season

        LITTLETON — An amazing season for Dakota Ridge came to a sour conclusion last Saturday at Dakota Ridge High School. After overcoming a 3-0 deficit to defeat Brighton 4-3 in the district semifinals, the Eagles lost to Mountain Vista 8-6 in a hard-fought championship game.
