BRIGHTON — Each year the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the North American Lake Management Society celebrate July as “Lakes Appreciation Month.”

This year, Barr Lake State Park will join the celebration to draw attention to the value and importance of Colorado’s more than 2,000 lakes and reservoirs. A wildlife refuge offering fishing, boating, and bird watching, Barr Lake State Park also serves as an important source of irrigation and municipal water.

Join the celebration of lakes by participating in fun educational and recreational opportunities, as well as a service activity at Barr Lake State Park from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12. The service activities include: shoreline cleanup, invasive weed removal, tree planting, russian olive removal and park maintenance.

Come dressed for being near the water and in the outdoors by wearing sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, and a hat, along with sunscreen and bug spray. To reward volunteers for their efforts, a complimentary BBQ lunch will be served at noon along with a drawing for various prizes. To volunteer, please call the Nature Center at 303-659-6005.

Various local groups will host booths with free activities in the afternoon from noon to 3 p.m. and the boat ramp area will feature canoe instruction, boat rides, face painting, a jumping castle, climbing wall and archery.
