BRIGHTON -- This one may top the state 5A tournament appearance this winter.

Brighton's Jared Garcia, who was a 113-pounder this season, was invited to participate in a wrestling tournament in Australia. He leaves for the Down Under Sports Wrestling Tournament June 28 and comes home July 9.

"My guess on being invited to wrestle in Australia was probably due to a German exchange program," Garcia said. "The Germans came to Colorado to wrestle, and I pinned the Greco German national champ in the second period in freestyle."

New Zealand hosted last year's event, which included competitors from Australia and the United States. All three countries picked up gold medals, and the United States won the final team dual tournament.

"I get to wrestle with other teens around the world and the U.S. team," Garcia said. "It'll be a great experience and a lot of mat time that I need and want."

Not only that, it's a chance for Garcia to pick up some pointers from other competitors.

"I hope to and I do count on it," he said. "It's also a chance to meet and greet with other people of all races. That's what I'm most excited about."

The cost for the trip is sizable. Send donation questions to jgarcia9497@gmail.com.

"I'll get it," Garcia said. "The deadline to turn in my money is June 2, and you need a paper form."
