BRIGHTON — The Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory will be holding its 11th annual “BBQ for the Birds” on Saturday, Oct. 5. Festivities kick off at 7 a.m. with a morning bird walk lead by renowned birder Greg Miller.

Communications and Membership Coordinator Teddy Parker-Renga said a lot of people are familiar with Miller through the movie “The Big Year.”

“He was one of the birders who was a part of the competition that inspired the book and the film,” Parker-Renga said, adding that a character based on Miller was played by Jack Black.

Miller will also present “My Big Year” and conduct an eBird workshop.

Photographer Noppadol Paothong will also conduct a workshop and judge entries for the observatory’s photography contest.

A history walk will kick off at 9:30 a.m. at the Old Stone House lead by RMBO volunteers. Parker-Renga said the walk will be unique as the volunteers have a wealth of knowledge about the Old Stone House and Barr Lake State Park.

Director Tammy VerCauteren said there will be 14 different exhibitors at the event including from the Butterfly Pavilion, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Zoo, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Audubon Society.

In addition to exhibitors, there will be kids activities, music, live raptors, both silent and live auctions, and a harvest themed lunch.

VerCauteren, as well as Parker-Renga, said they would like to see more participation from Brighton residents.

“We’d love to see more people from Brighton come out. This is a community resource and its here for them,” Parker-Renga said. “This is a great chance for them to come and take advantage of one of those activities that are taking place in their back yard — they don’t have to drive to Boulder or to Denver — they can just scoot on over here on Bromley (Lane) and enjoy a day of nature, birds and people.”

Admission for the day is $11 for members, $13 for nonmembers, $6 for kids ages 5 to 12 and children under 5 are free. Those who RSVP by Sept. 27 receive $1 off per person. To register for the BBQ for the Birds, visit www.rmbo.org or call 970-482-1707, ext. 30.
