  • Kids fishing derby June 2

    The Brighton Optimist Club’s kids free fishing derby starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Brighton Recreation Center, 555 N. 11th Ave.

    Free fishing, prizes, food and drinks are on the agenda.

  • Citizen police academy starts July 16 in Lochbuie

    The Lochbuie Police Department, 703 Weld County Road 37, Lochbuie, plans to offer a citizens police academy starting Monday, July 16.

    The academy will give participants a look at department functions, including traffic stops, building searches, arrest control and close-quarter combat.

    You can fill out an application at the Lochbuie town hall, 703 County Road 37, Lochbuie, or at www.lochbuie.org/187/PoliceDepartment. 

  • Fearless Christian Academy summer Bible camp through July 31

    Children can go on field trips and play games at the Fearless Christian Academy summer Bible camp June 11 to July 31.

    Children ages 2 to 6 can attend the “Young Explorers” group; children ages 7 to 12 can attend the “Junior Adventurer” group at the academy at 975 Platte River Blvd.

  • Legends tribute show June 16

    The Legends Tribute Show takes the stage at the Armory Performing Arts Center, 300 Strong St., from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, June 16.

    The program features Paizley Park and special guests Chase Pittman, Tina Navarro and the Lucero Twinz in a tribute to Prince, and the Cisco’s Kids Tribute Band in a tribute to the group War.

  • Pennock Center for Counseling offers summer class for teens in June

    The Pennock Center for Counseling will host a Teen Summer Group.

    The Teen Summer Group is a four-week class focused on helping teens balance friends, family, school and other stressors by teaching coping skills and stress management techniques.

    The class meets at noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 5 to 26. There is no charge, but parental consent is required. Lunch is provided.

  • Master gardener has tips for area residents

    Adams County master gardener Cassey Anderson will have tips for home gardeners at meetings this summer.

    Gardeners can meet Anderson every third Tuesday of each month at Zion Community Gardens, 395 S. 14th Ave., and on the fourth Thursday of the month at Northgate Community Gardens, 4801 Mount Evans St. 

    Both sets of meetings begin at 6 p.m. and last for 90 minutes. 

  • Barr Lake workers to give away fishing rods May 5

    Barr Lake State Park workers plan to give away 100 fishing rods during an annual fishing clinic at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5.

    Children must sign up for the clinic to get a fishing rod. To get more details, call the Nature Center 303-659-6005.

  • Sean May memorial run May 12

    The 10th annual Sean May Memorial Run steps off at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Barr Lake State Park, 13401 Picadilly Road.

    May was a chief deputy district attorney in Adams County. He was killed in 2009. The case has not been solved.

  • Fire kills two cats at marijuana-grow

    Two cats died in a house fire in east Brighton.

    Fire crews battled the fire for nearly three hours after arriving on scene around noon Thursday, April 12, at 24777 Green Drive, according to Natalie Ridderbos, public information officer for the Brighton Fire Rescue District.

    No one was home during the fire.
